Extended out-of-town business? Kids away at school? Dependent children in another city? Any time you or your family will be away for at least 90 days, you may qualify for a Guest Membership. This special feature lets you use the services of an affiliated BlueCross BlueShield health maintenance organization (HMO) in the area where you're staying.
Coverage usually starts within 15 days after we have accepted the Guest Membership application. You will receive a confirmation letter from the Away From Home Care coordinator. This will include a copy of the completed Guest Membership application for your files, showing the start and end dates of the Guest Membership. It will also include instructions for renewing.
Guest members will receive information from the HMO in their area, the Host HMO. They'll learn how to choose a primary care physician and how to access benefits. They'll also get an ID card to use for medical services while in the Host's area. Benefits will be similar to what they would have at home, but may vary depending upon the policies of the Host HMO.
The Guest Membership will only cover medical and hospital services in the Host area. If members have prescription drug coverage through BlueChoice HealthPlan, they should continue to use the BlueChoice HealthPlan card for all prescriptions. Dental and vision benefits are not available in the Host area. For more information, view the Away from Home Care brochure.
