Founded in 1984, BlueChoice HealthPlan was one of the first health maintenance organizations (HMOs) in South Carolina. Originally known as Companion HealthCare, it was the first HMO offered by BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.
BlueChoice HealthPlan experienced explosive growth during its first few years, and today, nearly 200,000 members have chosen BlueChoice HealthPlan.
Throughout our history, we have stressed the need for preventive care. We created several programs to help our members stay healthy, including our Great Expectations® for health programs.
BlueChoice HealthPlan is nationally recognized for its wellness and disease management initiatives, including two dozen Great Expectations® for health programs that help members stay well or learn to better manage their illnesses.
The Great Expectations® COPD program was chosen as part of the 2011 edition of “Quality Profiles: The Leadership Series,” which is sponsored by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and Pfizer Inc. NCQA is an independent, not-for-profit organization that evaluates managed care organizations. Great Expectations COPD also received national recognition in the fall of 2010, when it was one of only four health plan programs selected for presentation during NCQA’s Health Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS) Best Practices national conference in Washington, D.C. HEDIS is a set of measures health plans use to uniformly collect data and report on their performance.
In December 2012, BlueChoice HealthPlan presented “Reducing Health Care Disparities: Men and Cardiovascular Disease” at the 2012 Science of Eliminating Health Disparities Summit, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. The presentation highlighted initiatives targeted toward men – who often are underserved medically.
In January 2013, A.M. Best Co. affirmed the A+ financial strength rating of BlueChoice HealthPlan as part of the group rating for the BlueCross® BlueShield® of South Carolina companies.
The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) invited BlueChoice HealthPlan to present the improved health outcomes of the health plan’s asthma program members at the AARC national conference on November 18, 2013.
BlueChoice HealthPlan also participates in NCQA's HEDIS.
