Important Member Identification (ID) Card Information

7/10/2019

The three character prefix on a member ID card is a foundational component of the BlueCard® Program. The prefix defines the service relationships and arrangements between the Blue Plan, and its subscribers. Previously, prefixes beginning with ZC were specifically assigned to all BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and BlueChoice® HealthPlan accounts. Prefixes ZCB and ZCI are examples that should now be filed with carrier code (payer ID) 401 – BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Preferred BlueSM and BlueEssentialsSM (also includes all out-of state BlueCard members).

What you need to do
We recommend when BlueCross members arrive at your office or facility, continue to ask to see their current member ID cards at each visit. Doing so will help you:

  • Identify the member's product.
  • Obtain health plan contact information.
  • Speed clams processing.

Remember, member ID cards are for identification purposes only and do not guarantee eligibility or payment of claims. You should always verify patient eligibility by using our secure online portal, My Insurance ManagerSM, on our websites, www.SouthCarolinaBlues.com or www.BlueChoiceSC.com. You can also verify eligibility for out-of-state members by calling 800-676-BLUE (2583).

For a complete list of payer IDs, visit the Electronic Carrier Codes page in the Education Center of our websites. If you have any questions about payer IDs, you may contact our Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) area at EDI.Services@bcbssc.com or Provider Education by using the Provider Education Contact Form.

BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
