Medical Policy Update: Flow Cytometry

Medical Policy Update: Flow Cytometry

2/3/2017

Flow Cytometry is a powerful technology that is able to analyze multiple characteristics of cells simultaneously. It is used for a variety of purposes, including diagnosis of leukemia and lymphoma, cell identification and quantification (such as in individuals with HIV), identification of therapeutic targets and identification of prognostic markers. Currently, preauthorization is required for any Flow Cytometry consisting of 29 or more units. Effective May 1, 2017, a change to policy CAM 120 – Flow Cytometry will be implemented to reduce the number of units from 29 to 24 before preauthorization is required. This change will make the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and BlueChoice HealthPlan medical policies more in line with Medicare.

For complete information on the change to policy CAM 120, go to the medical policies section of our websites, www.SouthCarolinaBlues.com or www.BlueChoiceSC.com. You may also contact Provider Education by using the Provider Education Contact Form or by calling 803-264-4730.

BlueCross® BlueShield® of South Carolina is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
