Mental Health and Substance Abuse Information

Mental Health and Substance Abuse Information

Companion Benefit Alternatives Inc. (CBA)* manages behavioral health and substance abuse benefits for most of our members and their dependents. (Please note: Employers may choose another organization to manage these benefits. Please check your handbook to make sure you have these benefits and to see which plan you have.)

Your Mental Health Matters

Behavioral health issues can be stressful and confusing. CBA is here to help you navigate the behavioral health care system. With tools and information to help keep life on course, CBA is your go-to resource. On behalf of your health plan, CBA administers the behavioral health program and provides mental health and substance abuse benefits.

Good mental health is vital to your overall health. When our mental health is poor, it can affect our entire body and significantly harm our physical health.

For instance, research shows that stress is closely linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity. It also shows that people who feel depressed or chronically stressed may have a greater risk of physical illnesses.

How Else Can CBA Help?

CBA has more than a decade of experience in clinical and behavioral health benefits management. The staff includes board-certified psychiatrists, registered psychiatric nurses, licensed practical nurses, social workers and professional counselors, with a wide variety of clinical backgrounds. CBA can help make referrals to network health care professionals. You can get a higher level of coverage from a network provider than from someone outside the network.

The network has professionals within the state of South Carolina and across the country. It features board-certified psychiatrists and addictionologists. It also has licensed psychologists, social workers and professional counselors. All these health care professionals will file claims and get pre-certifications from CBA for your treatment.

CBA requires network professionals to follow the credentialing standards from the National Committee of Quality Assurance (NCQA). This independent, not-for-profit organization is dedicated to assessing and reporting on the quality of managed care plans.

If your employer has contracted for an employee assistance program (EAP), CBA will try to coordinate with that program for ongoing treatment for a behavioral health problem.

If you have questions, please call (800) 868-1032. You or your physician may call to get a referral.
