New Medical Policy: Cluneal Nerve Block for Treatment of Low Back Pain

Effective Aug. 1, 2021, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and BlueChoice® HealthPlan will implement a new medical policy for cluneal nerve blocks.  The policy, CAM 274 — Cluneal Nerve Block for Treatment of Low Back Pain, will be added to the Medical Policies pages of www.BlueChoiceSC.com.

Cluneal nerve blocks are used as a proposed treatment for individuals with cluneal nerve entrapment syndromes causing pain in the low back and buttocks. Cluneal nerve injections or blocks for the treatment of low back pain is considered investigational or unproven and therefore, considered not medically necessary and will continue to be a non-covered service.
